Social Benefits: Council ICT managers should embrace social media and networks such as Facebook and Twitter as a business and communication tool, and not block staff from using them, according to a new report from the Society of IT Management (Socitm). The report, which found that around 90% of councils restrict their staffs’ use of social media, also says that security safeguards surrounding their use should be built into councils’ ICT strategy:

Gov App: Directgov has launched its first smartphone application or ‘app’ - a live travel news service which gives users information on roads, trains, tubes, ferries and trams across the UK, with details of road closures, accidents, and replacement bus services. The ‘app’ can be downloaded to the Apple iPhone from the company’s iTunes Store, and is also available for all internet-enabled mobile phones:

Free Stuff: Government data on crime, health, environment and other subjects is being made available to the public through a new website developed by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the internet, and a team including Professor Nigel Shadbolt from the University of Southampton. ‘Data.gov.uk’ contains more than 2,500 searchable datasets, and also features ideas for further possible resources such as Ordnance Survey geographical data. The work mirrors a push for online public data transparency by the Obama White House in the US through the similar site ‘Data.gov’ (http://www.data.gov/), which last week added 300 new datasets:
