'Serious Games' and 3-D Web in Government
Publishing news published: Wednesday 22nd April 2009
The use of games technology and 3-dimensional websites for public service purposes are two cutting-edge innovations being tested by the UK government, E-Government Bulletin reports.
We are delighted to announce that the two founders of Lateral Visions, Carl Gavin and Stephen Clibbery, have agreed to speak at our 15 July event at Olympia in Central London, Building Perfect council Websites. Carl and Stephen will join a plenary panel headed 'Visions Of The Future: Social, Mobile And 3-Dimensional'.
Several of the company's early projects have had a public service element, such as an educational driving simulation with a difference for schoolchildren, commissioned by North Wales Police. The company has also developed a blend between 3-D virtual tours of actual physical and historical locations with gaming elements, with particular application in the heritage sector.
It was a demonstration of these projects that led to the company being commissioned to develop a piece of work for the E-Delivery Team (EDT), a former unit in the Cabinet Office which in April 2008 moved to the Department for Work and Pensions when the latter took charge of the Government Gateway, the infrastructure allowing government, citizens and businesses to communicate securely online.
EDT runs a special programme entitled 'The key - unlocking innovation in government,' with support from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. It has worked with Lateral visions to create a 3-Dimensional demonstrator of an online innovation reception area, complete with videos and presentations.
