Lively MPs' Panel Closes Future Democracy '09

Events news published: Monday 30th November 2009

Headstar's sixth annual e-democracy conference, Future Democracy '09, drew an international crowd and generated lively debate, including its traditional closing 'Question Time' style panel of MPs.

Appearing on the closing plenary panel were Tom Harris MP; Lynne Featherstone MP; Lord Norton of Louth and Helen Milner, Managing Director, UK online centres. Questions addressed ranged from politicians' use of blogging and Twitter; to the future of the BBC; and what to do with your dog if your party leader comes to dinner.

The events has cemented its place as the UK's leading annual conference on all aspects of e-democracy, from e-campaigning, e-petitions and e-voting to the use of the internet and new technologies in the policy cycle; democratic activity and engagement.

Our speaker line-up this year was particularly strong: see the conference website for the full final programe. Will Straw, editor of Left Foot Forward, was the opening keynote and explored the future of political blogging in the run-up to the 2010 general election.

The event has already gained a fair amount of coverage including BBC News Online: Government e-petitions give power to the people
and
Noella Edelmann, Danube University Krems: 'Digital Government 2.0'

Catch21, the internet TV channel focusing on engaging young people in politics, has now produced a video highlights package of the conference, now available to watch on YouTube. Thanks to them and to our other media partners, Total Politics and Prospect; as well as to our sponsors Epoch, modern.gov, Public-i and Web-Labs; and to our supporters and partners the Hansard Society, mySociety; Socitm; PEP-NET and RSA.

See you all next year - to ensure you have all the early news of next year's events (and all other Headstar events) just make sure you are signed up to one of our email newsletters by registering on this website.
